It all started when…

I am from Colombia and my interest in nature arose when my grandparents told me that they used to see macaws coming from the Amazon rainforest to the Andes mountains where I grew up. I dreamed of studying ecological management and restoration and someday providing habitat for the macaws, so they could return, as I have never seen any due to sad deforestation and hunting. I moved to California eight years ago, learned more about land stewardship by caring for redwood and oak forests. I also became a wildlife specialist working with trail cameras to analyze animal life. However, the summer before I transferred to the University in California my life changed. I had the opportunity to scuba dive and fell in love with the feeling underwater, like I was on another planet. I moved to Hawaii a few months ago and want to major in Marine Biology. I want to help coral ecosystems and be able to create a connection with ocean life. I had the opportunity to go to Japan and teach English, played on several sports teams, learned to play different musical instruments, and done many other things because I like to try new experiences all the time.

My research...

I collaborate in the analysis of reef fish feeding behaviors and the changing structural complexity of coral reefs. I will also collaborate in other research related to the management and restoration of coral reef ecosystems.
