It all started when…

I am from Mililani, Oʻahu, so growing up I was always outside whether at the beach or going on hikes. In fall 2020 and spring 2021, I participated in an internship with MAʻO Organic Farms in Waiʻanae. Here, I was taught the process of food production and how it impacts communities. Along the way, I was introduced and taught to identify new vegetables and fruits. My affinity for plants was strengthened during the following internship I participated in, the Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps 2021 summer program with KUPU. I was exposed to the conservation efforts occurring in the makai regions of Oʻahu. Serving with different organizations I saw how restoring the native flora and fauna can positively affect loko iʻa (fishponds) and the reefs beyond. Currently, I am studying Natural Resources and Environmental Management at UH Mānoa.

My research...

I am assisting in identifying and labeling “grazing halos” or patch reefs captured in satellite images to better understand fish behavior and patterns within these halos. These annotations will later be used to teach a machine-learning algorithm to self-identify these halos.
