Three new papers on solving the mystery of the coral reef halos

We’ve just had three new papers out on the ‘riddle’ of the reef halos that are found on coral reefs throughout the world. The University of Hawai’i press release gives a good summary of this collective work, which was published simultaneously in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, New Scientist, and Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution.

These papers have generated quite a bit of interest in the scientific and popular media, including an interview segment on CBC’s “Quirks and Quarks” show and print articles in places like Nature (Images of the Month), The Atlantic, Live Science, Daily Mail UK, Science Times, Fox News, Breitbart News, RealClear Science, Science Times, and Science Daily.

Thanks to the amazing Google Earth Outreach team for making this cool little video! This is the east coast of Australia, as seen from the northeast, and the Great Barrier Reef where this research was done.
