New Publication By Dava Watson Explores the Significance of Opheodesoma Spectabilis
A new study by former high school intern Dava Watson, mentored by recent PhD graduate Annie Innes-Gold for three years, explores the ecology and environmental significance of Opheodesoma spectabilis, commonly known as the conspicuous sea cucumber. Watson’s paper, The Ecological Mysteries of Opheodesoma spectabilis: Seasonal trends, habitat preferences, and climate responses, was recently published in the Journal of Emerging Investigators (JEI).
Highly abundant throughout Kāneʻohe Bay, conspicuous sea cucumbers are a familiar sight to swimmers and researchers. Despite their abundance, little research has examined why this species thrives so well in the bay and how it responds to changing environmental conditions. Watson’s study sought to address some of these unanswered questions by investigating seasonal trends and habitat preferences over a span of two years. As well as assessing responses to environmental stressors.
The findings of her study highlight several factors that may help explain the species abundance in Kāneʻohe Bay, including its response to acidic conditions and its potential role in counteracting the effects of turbid water through bioturbation. Together, the results provide new insight into the ecological importance of a common but understudied invertebrate in Hawai’i’s ecosystems.
